'Swalpa English, Thumba Fun' is Akshara's introductory English language programme for primary school children where English is taught as a second language (ESL). This teacher-supportive, child friendly programme is designed primarily for listening-comprehension skills (L), followed by speaking (S), basic reading (R) and writing (W) skills.
The content covers themes and stories in familiar contexts. This is designed to deliver L-S-R-W skills and give confidence even to the teacher whose first language in school was not English. The programme content is divided into 3 Levels based on the child’s learning ability. The following teaching learning materials are free and can be downloaded and used in any
geography.
The Package consists of:

Level 1
This is for beginners. The content has familiar themes and uses simple language structures. The emphasis is on listening comprehension with encouragement to begin speaking.

PICTORIAL CHART
The chart contains 7 themes and stories around which conversations are designed.

TEACHER’S MANUAL
This manual has pictures which are numbered and divided into parts for easy conversation. The manual provides guidelines on the use of the Workbook, teaching of rhymes and phonics.

ALPHABET FLASH CARDS
These flashcards can be used to introduce phonics through short words and recognisable images.

WORKBOOK
The workbook introduces beginners to writing English along with practising letter sounds.
Level 2
Builds on the listening skills of level 1. This level has slightly enhanced vocabulary in the context of more themes and familiar stories and introduces simple reading skills.

ALPHABET FLASH CARDS
These flash cards can be used to introduce phonics through short words and recognisable images, including words on the reverse of the cards.

WORKBOOK
The workbook consists of activities to help the child practise letter and sounds, form three letter words and read and write short sentences.

PICTORIAL CHART
The chart contains 8 themes and stories around which conversations are designed.

TEACHER’S MANUAL
The manual consists of guidelines for teachers as well as tips for conversation through questions and answers, phonics, stories, rhymes as well as on the usage of the workbook.

READING CARDS
This is a set of 7 cards (numbered 1 to 7), which teaches reading in easy steps and uses simple words and sight words in an attractive context. Say-aloud words provide additional vocabulary.
Level 3
Introduces new vocabulary words, sentence structures and encourages conversation and reading.

ALPHABET FLASH CARDS
These flash cards can be used to introduce phonics through short words and recognisable images; these familiar words are ideal for making short sentences.

WORKBOOK
The workbook consists of activities for children to practise short words; supports reading and writing of sentences; introduces basic language structures.

PICTORIAL CHART
The chart contains 9 themes and stories around which conversations are designed.

TEACHER’S MANUAL
The manual consists of guidelines for teachers and engages through dialogue and Total Physical Response (TPR) activities; along with workbook activities.

READING CARDS
This is a set of 8 cards (numbered 8 to 15), which helps to widen the vocabulary base. Students learn to read short paragraphs. Say-aloud words add to the vocabulary.
