Ganitha Kalika Andolana (GKA) is Akshara’s Maths model designed as a support programme for students and teachers in government primary schools to bring proficiency to children in Grades 1-5. It focuses on improving maths skills by making learning fun and relevant to everyday life and is taught based on the philosophy of ‘Activity-based learning’. It seeks to encourage clarity of thought and the ability to address mathematical problems in day-to-day life. It is an activity-based learning programme that focuses on improving the maths skills of children in grades 1-5 by making learning fun. It emphasises ‘understanding by doing’, and peer learning.
The programme is implemented by provisioning maths Teaching Learning Materials (TLMs) to schools, and by providing training and support to teachers in government primary schools. These TLMs are designed to facilitate the learning of competencies prescribed in the Karnataka State curriculum. GKA has been developed with a great deal of research and input from subject experts and field practitioners. It supplements governmental efforts to enhance the quality of maths learning outcomes.

These TLMs are supported by Maths Concept Cards and a Teacher’s Manual (Kannada/Urdu/English) to facilitate learning in every classroom. The following teaching learning materials are free and can be downloaded and used in any geography.

The below Maths worksheets were disseminated to children via smartphones as a part of our Maneyalle Madona Lekka (MML) Campaign during the pandemic, to help children learn/practice maths concepts at home.
These practice worksheets can be given to children in Grades 4 and 5 even now, as homework.

These manuals provide guidelines for maths teachers on the use of teaching aids in the math kit provided as a part of the GKA programme.
The Kannada, English, Oriya and Urdu version of the Teacher’s handbook and concept cards are certified by SSA and the teachers in Karnataka and Odisha.

GKA TRAINING MANUALS
These training manuals provide guidelines for any resource persons (maths RPs) on how to conduct GKA training sessions. It lists the uses of teaching aids (TLMs) in the maths kit provided as part of the GKA programme as well as the philosophy of activity-based teaching and learning. The training guide is a reference for RPs to conduct 1 day of refresher training, 3 days or 5 days GKA trainings.
It explains how to present the GKA philosophy, classroom management, dos and don’ts for the trainees/teachers with activities and games described in detail. It addresses a few frequently asked queries.
The guide is available only in three Indian languages so far – Kannada, English and Oriya. Kannada and English manuals are reviewed by Karnataka Education department’s RPs.
More than 2,00,000 teachers and RPs have been trained on GKA thus far.

MATH CONCEPT CARDS
This is a set of 10 cards with illustrations and short stories to familiarise the children with the terminology related to maths concepts. It also has questions which encourages critical thinking among children. These cards are provided along with the kits.
